HOW WE WORK
UWCM works with community facilitators/volunteers, partnerships to mitigate the suffering caused by poverty, inequality, and injustice. We work mainly with local, community structures that are best placed to understand the local needs of their communities and can engage and encourage full participation of the intended beneficiaries of their programs. In particular, we support and strengthen local partners i.e. community-based organizations, local churches and communities, and emerging initiatives that share our vision and values to implement effective and sustainable solutions for the most vulnerable people. We respond to humanitarian crises with emergency support and help communities to be better prepared for disasters. We also engage in advocacy and lobbying, capacity building through training and education in communities, to tackle some of the root causes of poverty.
Our partnership approach seeks to build the capacity and competences, tap experience, complement the expertise of the vulnerable people and their communities and complement competencies and skills of local partners, so that they can effectively achieve their objectives. This is in an effort to build local community-based organizations (CBOs) in sustainable ways. Our approach is one in which the partner retains control over its own programs and organization and are able to say, “we did it ourselves’ feeling the ownership.
